New Year’s Resolutions…
Posted by John Stickley in Bible & Theology
As the new year begins tomorrow, I thought I’d take a very brief moment to talk about new year’s resolutions. So many people make them… almost everyone fails at keeping them.
I wonder… what kind of resolutions should we be making, as believers? While I’m sure losing weight, saving money, eating right, getting a better education, reducing stress, or volunteering to help others can all be God-honoring, are they really the resolutions we should be making?
Personally? I like what Paul shares in 1 Corinthians 2:2 (NIV):
For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.
He resolved to know nothing except Jesus.
Now that’s a resolution if ever I saw one.
I don’t know what your plans for a new year’s resolution may be, but I do pray that knowing Jesus personally, deeply, and intimately is at the top of your list.
May God bless each of you in 2009!

Be it resolved to make no new resolutions, which the flesh won’t keep anyway, for it can’t.
Dear SBC Impact,
I resolve to be nice to you this year–Not!!
Seriously, I look forward to the New Year that God will be glorified in everything that we all say and do.
Blessings,
Tim
Paul,
Funny how the fleshly nature works, isn’t it? If only the flesh were easier to kill, that we might truly die to self and live according to the direction of the Spirit!
Tim,
Maybe you ought to resolve to be nice to us this year… it’s one resolution that you wouldn’t have to keep for long, given that there’s only a few hours left!
(Sorry, couldn’t resist!)
All kidding aside, we do wish you, your family, and your church all the best for 2009!
My new years resolutions are easy. I just change the date from 2008 to 2009 and start over.
I resolve to not drink alcohol and to not believe in women pastors. I resolve to not make any moonshine in 2009. I resolve to believe that the correct view of baptism and the Lord’s Supper is important. I resolve to stand on the truthfulness and the trustworthiness of the Word of God more. I resolve to eat at Bozo’s barbeque restaurant. I resolve to not go into the Memphis city limits, unless I absolutely have to. I absolutely have to from time to time. I resolve to love my TN Vols even more this year than the last. I resolve to hate Notre Dame, Florida, and Alabama more than ever. I resolve to punch out the lights of any mugger that tries to hold up me or any of my kin. I resolve to eat good food, and to hug my wife more.
Everyone have a great, God blessed 2009!
David
